"abstract": "The U.S. Geological Survey?s Federal-State\r\ncooperative observation well network in upstate New\r\nYork was evaluated in terms of areal coverage,\r\nobjectives, and short- and long-term expansion plans.\r\nThis report presents a history of the observation well\r\nnetwork in upstate New York and depicts, on maps,\r\nthe distribution of observation wells with respect to\r\nclimatic regions, physiographic regions, and aquifer\r\ntype (bedrock, till, and stratified drift) within New\r\nYork State. It also describes siting criteria for observation\r\nwells, outlines the objectives of three types of\r\nobservation well subnetworks, and offers suggestions\r\nfor short- and long-term improvements of the current\r\nnetwork. Two appendixes contain (1) a table of\r\nselected well data, and (2) hydrographs and boxplots\r\nthat show median monthly water levels and monthly\r\npercentile statistics for water levels in the 46 observation\r\nwells.",
