The USGS recently completed an assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources of the Raton Basin-Sierra Grande Uplift Province of southeastern Colorado and northeastern New Mexico (USGS Province 41). The Cretaceous Vermejo Formation and Cretaceous-Tertiary Raton Formation have production and undiscovered resources of coalbed methane. Other formations in the province exhibit potential for gas resources and limited production.\r\n\r\nThis assessment is based on geologic principles and uses the total petroleum system concept. The geologic elements of a total petroleum system include hydrocarbon source rocks (source rock maturation, hydrocarbon generation and migration), reservoir rocks (sequence stratigraphy and petrophysical properties), and hydrocarbon traps (trap formation and timing). The USGS used this geologic framework to define two total petroleum systems and five assessment units. All five assessment units were quantitatively assessed for undiscovered gas resources. Oil resources were not assessed because of the limited potential due to levels of thermal maturity of petroleum source rocks.", "description": "HTML Document; CD-ROM", "publisher": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "U.S. Geological Survey" }, "author": [ { "@type": "Person", "name": "Higley, Debra K. higley@usgs.gov", "givenName": "Debra K.", "familyName": "Higley", "email": "higley@usgs.gov", "identifier": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "propertyID": "ORCID", "value": "0000-0001-8024-9954", "url": "https://orcid.org/0000-0001-8024-9954" }, "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Central Energy Resources Science Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/central-energy-resources-science-center" } ] } ], "funder": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Central Energy Resources Science Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/central-energy-resources-science-center" } ], "spatialCoverage": [ { "@type": "Place", "additionalType": "country", "name": "United States", "url": "https://geonames.org/4074035" }, { "@type": "Place", "additionalType": "state", "name": "Colorado" }, { "@type": "Place", "additionalType": "state", "name": "New Mexico" }, { "@type": "Place", "additionalType": "unknown", "name": "Raton Basin-- Sierra Grande Uplift Province" }, { "@type": "Place", "geo": [ { "@type": "GeoShape", "additionalProperty": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "name": "GeoJSON", "value": { "type": "FeatureCollection", "features": [ { "type": "Feature", "properties": {}, "geometry": { "type": "Polygon", "coordinates": [ [ [ -105.3333, 35 ], [ -103, 35 ], [ -103, 38 ], [ -105.3333, 38 ], [ -105.3333, 35 ] ] ] } } ] } } }, { "@type": "GeoCoordinates", "latitude": 36.5, "longitude": -104.16665 } ] } ] } }
