Duran began his career with the USGS as a GS-1 student in the Pueblo Subdistrict office in Pueblo, Colorado, while still attending high school. In 1991, Alan became a permanent USGS employee in the Publications Section as a Scientific Illustrator in the Graphics Unit in the Colorado District (later the USGS Colorado Water Science Center [COWSC]), in Lakewood, CO. Alan participated in the USGS Upward Mobility program in 1999 and transferred to the Lakewood Field Office (LFO) as a Hydrologic Technician. During his time with the LFO, Alan also worked for several projects, which included Deer Trail DTX (GW/QW) and the South Platte NAWQA program (GW/SW/QW). Alan transferred to the Rocky Mountain Arsenal in 2006, in Commerce City, CO, with a focus on Ground Water (GW) activities, such as Water-Quality collection and maintaining a GW network of observation wells. Alan returned to the COWSC, in Lakewood, CO, in 2013 as a member of the Data Management Unit (DMU).
