       "abstract": "The Extended Spring Indices are mathematical models that predict the \u201cstart of spring\u201d (timing of first leaf or first bloom) at a particular location. These models were constructed using historical observations of the timing of first leaf and first bloom in a cloned lilac cultivar (Syringa X chinensis \u2018Red Rothomagensis\u2019) and two cloned honeysuckle cultivars (Lonicera tatarica L. \u2018Arnold Red\u2019 and Lonicera korolkowii Stapf, also known as \u2018Zabelii\u2019). Primary inputs to the model are temperature and weather events, beginning January 1 of each year. The model outputs are first leaf and first bloom date for a given location. The Extended Spring Indices support understanding of spatial patterns in the timing of spring, including short-term forecasts to support resource management. They have also been used as an indicator of climate change by both the Environmental Protection Agency and the National Climate Assessment. "
