Understanding links among vegetation, climate, and people in this vast biome requires highly resolved long-term records that integrate regional inputs. We developed an 850-year pollen-based record of supraregional vegetation change using a southern Greenland ice core and atmospheric modeling that identified the boreal and mixed-conifer forests of eastern Canada as the dominant pollen source regions. Conifer pollen increased \u223c1400 CE at the onset of the cooler and drier Little Ice Age. A subsequent decline began \u223c1650 CE and a statistically significant pollen change after 1760 CE suggests ecological consequences of the Little Ice Age cooling and initial human exploitation that persisted until recent decades. These supraregional changes are broadly consistent with local records and demonstrate intensification of human impacts on northern forests, suggesting a shift from a climate-modulated to an increasingly human-controlled system during recent centuries.", "description": "e2023GL105581, 10 p.", "publisher": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "American Geophysical Union" }, "author": [ { "@type": "Person", "name": "Henne, Paul D. phenne@usgs.gov", "givenName": "Paul D.", "familyName": "Henne", "email": "phenne@usgs.gov", "identifier": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "propertyID": "ORCID", "value": "0000-0003-1211-5545", "url": "https://orcid.org/0000-0003-1211-5545" }, "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/geosciences-and-environmental-change-science-center" } ] }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Brugger, Sandra O.", "givenName": "Sandra O.", "familyName": "Brugger", "identifier": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "propertyID": "ORCID", "value": "0000-0003-4188-2276", "url": "https://orcid.org/0000-0003-4188-2276" }, "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Desert Research Institute, Reno, NV" } ] }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Chellman, Nathan J.", "givenName": "Nathan J.", "familyName": "Chellman" }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Plach, Andreas", "givenName": "Andreas", "familyName": "Plach", "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "University of Vienna" } ] }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Stohl, Andreas", "givenName": "Andreas", "familyName": "Stohl", "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "University of Vienna" } ] }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "McConnell, Joseph R.", "givenName": "Joseph R.", "familyName": "McConnell", "identifier": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "propertyID": "ORCID", "value": "0000-0001-9051-5240", "url": "https://orcid.org/0000-0001-9051-5240" }, "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Desert Research Institute" } ] } ], "funder": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Geosciences and Environmental Change Science Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/geosciences-and-environmental-change-science-center" } ] }
