Carbon sequestration in soils is critical to prevent carbon losses from future disturbances, and we show that natural ecosystems store more carbon belowground than managed systems do. Natural and human-caused disturbances affect soil processes that shape ecosystem recovery and competitive interactions between native, exotics, and climate refugees. Tomorrow's carbon budgets will depend on how land use, natural disturbances, and climate variability will interact and affect the balance between carbon capture and release.", "publisher": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Elsevier" }, "author": [ { "@type": "Person", "name": "Sleeter, Benjamin M. bsleeter@usgs.gov", "givenName": "Benjamin M.", "familyName": "Sleeter", "email": "bsleeter@usgs.gov", "identifier": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "propertyID": "ORCID", "value": "0000-0003-2371-9571", "url": "https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2371-9571" }, "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Western Fisheries Research Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/western-fisheries-research-center" }, { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Western Geographic Science Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/western-geographic-science-center" } ] }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Bachelet, Dominique", "givenName": "Dominique", "familyName": "Bachelet" }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Ferschweiler, Ken", "givenName": "Ken", "familyName": "Ferschweiler", "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Conservation Biology Institute, Covallis OR" } ] }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Sheehan, Tim", "givenName": "Tim", "familyName": "Sheehan" }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Baker, Barry", "givenName": "Barry", "familyName": "Baker" }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Zhu, Zhiliang zzhu@usgs.gov", "givenName": "Zhiliang", "familyName": "Zhu", "email": "zzhu@usgs.gov", "identifier": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "propertyID": "ORCID", "value": "0000-0002-6860-6936", "url": "https://orcid.org/0000-0002-6860-6936" }, "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Office of the AD Climate and Land-Use Change", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/mission-areas/ecosystems" }, { "@type": "Organization", "name": "National Climate Change and Wildlife Science Center", "url": null }, { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Land Change Science", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/ecosystems/land-change-science-program" } ] } ], "funder": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Western Geographic Science Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/western-geographic-science-center" } ] }
