   "abstract": "The heat capacity of cryolite (Na3AlF6) has been measured from 7 to 1000 K by low-temperature adiabatic and high-temperature differential scanning calorimetry. Low-temperature data were obtained on material from the same hand specimen in the calorimetric laboratories of the University of Michigan and U.S. Geological Survey. The results obtained are in good agreement, and yield average values for the entropy of cryolite of:S0298= 238.5J/mol KS0T\u2212S0298= 145.114lnT+ 193.009\u221710\u22123T\u221210.366\u2217 105T2\u2212 872.89J/mol K(273\u2212836.5K)\u0394STrans= 9.9J/mol KS0T\u2212S0298=198.414 ln T+73.203\u2217 10\u22123T\u221263.814\u2217105T2\u22121113.11J/mol K(836.5\u22121153K)with the transition temperature between \u03b1- and \u03b2-cryolite taken at 836.5 K.These data have been combined with data in the literature to calculate phase equilibria for the system Na Fe Al Si O F. The resultant phase diagrams allow constraints to be placed on the\u00a0fO2,\u00a0fF2,\u00a0aSiO2\u00a0and\u00a0T\u00a0conditions of formation for assemblages in alkalic rocks. A sample application suggests that log\u00a0fO2\u00a0is approximately \u221219.2,\u00a0logfF2\u00a0is \u221231.9 to \u221233.2, and\u00a0aSiO2\u00a0is \u22121.06 at assumed\u00a0PT\u00a0conditions of 1000 K, 1 bar for the villiaumite-bearing Ilimaussaq intrusion in southwestern Greenland.",
