"abstract": "New seismic stations added to a regional seismic network cannot be used to calculate local magnitude (\u2060ML\u2060) until a revised regionwide amplitude decay function is developed. Each station must record a minimum number of local and regional earthquakes that meet specific amplitude requirements prior to recalibration of the amplitude decay function. Station component adjustments (\u2060dML\u2060;\u00a0Uhrhammer\u00a0et\u00a0al., 2011) are then calculated after inverting for a new regional amplitude decay function, constrained by the sum of dML\u2060\u00a0for long\u2010running stations. Therefore, there can be significant delay between when a new station starts contributing real\u2010time waveform packets and when data can be included in magnitude determinations. We propose the use of known estimates of seismic site conditions such as the time\u2010averaged shear\u2010wave velocity (\u2060VS\u2060) of the upper 30\u00a0m (\u2060VS30\u2060) and the site dominant frequency (\u2060fd\u2060) to calculate dML\u2060\u2060. Previously established dML\u2060\u2060, measured VS30\u2060\u2060, and fd\u00a0data are available for between 126 and 458 horizontal components (east\u2013west and north\u2013south) at 81 seismic stations in the California Integrated Seismic Network; dML\u2060\u00a0data range from \u22121.10 to 0.39, VS30\u2060\u00a0values range from 202 to\u00a01464\u2009\u2009m/s\u2060, and 440 fd\u00a0values are compiled from earthquake and microseismic records that range from 0.13 to 21\u00a0Hz. We find VS30\u2060\u00a0and dML\u2060\u00a0exhibit a positive coefficient of determination (\u2060R=0.59\u2060), indicating that as VS30\u2060\u00a0increases, dML\u2060\u00a0increases. This implies that greater site amplification (lower VS30\u2060\u2060) results in smaller dML\u2060\u2060. fd\u00a0and dML\u2060\u00a0also generally exhibit a positive correlation (\u2060R2<0.56\u2060), which implies lower dML\u00a0values are related to site resonance at depth\u2010dependent frequencies. Using the developed relationships, VS30\u2060\u00a0or\u00a0fd\u00a0measurements can be used to establish a provisional dML\u2060\u00a0for newly established stations. This procedure allows new stations to contribute to regional network ML\u00a0determinations immediately without the need to wait until a minimum set of earthquake data has been recorded.",
