The\u00a0logK\u00a0of BaCO3(cr), the Gibbs energy, the enthalpy and entropy of the reaction at 298.15 K are \u22128.562, 48.87 kJ \u00b7 mol\u22121, 2.94 kJ \u00b7 mol\u22121and \u2212154.0 J \u00b7 mol\u22121\u00a0\u00b7 K\u22121, respectively. The equilibrium constants are consistent with an aqueous model that includes the ion pairs BaHCO3+(aq) and BaCO30(aq) Three different methods were used to evaluate the association constant of BaHCO3+(aq), and all yielded similar results. The temperature dependence of the association constant for the reaction\u00a0Ba2+(aq) +\u00a0HCO3\u2212(aq) =\u00a0BaHCO3+(aq) is given by\u00a0logKBaHCO3+\u00a0= \u22123.0938 + 0.013669T.\nThe log of the association constant, the Gibbs energy, the enthalpy and entropy of the reaction at 298.15\u00b0K are 0.982, \u22125.606 kJ \u00b7 mol\u22121, 23.26 kJ \u00b7 mol\u22121\u00a0and 96.8 J \u00b7 mol\u22121\u00a0\u00b7 K\u22121, respectively. The temperature dependence of the equilibrium constant for the reaction\u00a0Ba2+(aq) +\u00a0CO2\u22123(aq) =\u00a0BaCO03(aq) is given bylogKBaCO30\u00a0= 0.113 + 0.008721T.\nThe log of the association constant, the Gibbs energy, the enthalpy and entropy of the reaction at 298.15\u00b0 K are 2.71, \u221215.49 kJ \u00b7 mol\u22121, 14.84 kJ \u00b7 mol\u22121\u00a0and 101.7 J\u00b7 mol\u22121\u00a0\u00b7 K\u22121.\nThe above model leads to reliable calculations of the aqueous speciation and solubility of witherite in the system BaCO3-CO2-H2O from 0 to more than 90\u00b0C. Literature data on witherite solubility were re-evaluated and compared with the results of this study.\nProblems in the thennodynamic selections of Ba compounds are considered.
