While these systems may harbor substantial levels of biodiversity, they remain inadequately investigated. Deep-sea hard grounds may enhance diversity through the provision of structure and food for mobile fishes and invertebrates. However, the influence of habitat heterogeneity on benthic community structure is poorly known. In addition, understanding food webs and trophic linkages of deep-sea ecosystems is in its infancy. It is critical to understand the nature and periodicity of particle flux and the degree of trophic interactions within canyon habitats in order to evaluate ecosystem controls on abundance, biodiversity, and community function. The USGS has a long-term commitment to assist the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) meet their information needs in Outer Continental Shelf (OCS) regions. BOEM is concerned with preserving and protecting sensitive deep-sea communities as the need for oil, gas, and alternative energy exploration has increased in offshore environments. This research will enhance our understanding of the structure and function of significant biological communities and assists BOEM with identifying and delineating critical habitats in the OCS.", "description": "HTML Document", "publisher": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "U.S. Geological Survey" }, "author": [ { "@type": "Person", "name": "Demopoulos, Amanda W.J. ademopoulos@usgs.gov", "givenName": "Amanda W.J.", "familyName": "Demopoulos", "email": "ademopoulos@usgs.gov", "identifier": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "propertyID": "ORCID", "value": "0000-0003-2096-4694", "url": "https://orcid.org/0000-0003-2096-4694" }, "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Pacific Coastal and Marine Science Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/pacific-coastal-and-marine-science-center" }, { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Wetland and Aquatic Research Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/wetland-and-aquatic-research-center" }, { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Southeast Ecological Science Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/regions/southeast" } ] }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Kovacs, Kaitlin kkovacs@usgs.gov", "givenName": "Kaitlin", "familyName": "Kovacs", "email": "kkovacs@usgs.gov", "identifier": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "propertyID": "ORCID", "value": "0000-0002-4089-434X", "url": "https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4089-434X" }, "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Wetland and Aquatic Research Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/wetland-and-aquatic-research-center" } ] } ], "funder": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Wetland and Aquatic Research Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/wetland-and-aquatic-research-center" } ] }
