"abstract": "The age of the Rockland\u00a0tephra, which includes an\u00a0ash-flow\u00a0tuff\u00a0south and west of Lassen Peak in northern\u00a0California\u00a0and a widespread ash-fall deposit that produced a distinct stratigraphic marker in western North\u00a0America, is constrained to 565,000 to 610,000 yr by\u00a040Ar/39Ar and U\u2013Pb dating.\u00a040Ar/39Ar ages on\u00a0plagioclase\u00a0from\u00a0pumice\u00a0in the Rockland have a weighted mean age of 609,000 \u00b1 7000 yr. Isotopic ages of spots on individual\u00a0zircon\u00a0crystals, analyzed by the SHRIMP-RG\u00a0ion microprobe, range from \u223c500,000 to \u223c800,000 yr; a\u00a0subpopulation\u00a0representing crystal\u00a0rims\u00a0yielded a weighted-mean age of 573,000 \u00b1 19,000 yr. Overall stratigraphic\u00a0constraints\u00a0on the age are provided by two volcanic units, including the underlying tephra of the\u00a0Lava\u00a0Creek\u00a0Tuff erupted within Yellowstone\u00a0National Park\u00a0that has an age of 639,000 \u00b1 2000 yr. The basaltic\u00a0andesite\u00a0of Hootman Ranch stratigraphically overlies the Rockland in the Lassen Peak area and has\u00a040Ar/39Ar ages of 565,000 \u00b1 29,000 and 565,000 \u00b1 12,000 yr for plagioclase and groundmass, respectively. Identification of Rockland tephra in\u00a0ODP\u00a0core 1018 offshore of central California is an important stratigraphic age that also constrains the eruption age to between 580,000 and 600,000 yr.",
