In order to better constrain controls on coastal vulnerability and evolution, the region\u2019s sediment sources, transport pathways and sediment sinks must be identified. This project defines the geologic framework of the Delmarva coastal system through geophysical mapping of the inner continental shelf. Such information can then be related to the physical processes that govern coastal system evolution at storm-event and longer timescales. Similar efforts conducted in Fire Island, NY, North Carolina, South Carolina and Massachusetts have proven crucial to the assessment of coastal hazards as well as to habitat characterization and identification of cultural resources in those regions. Defining the geologic framework of the Delmarva coastal system through geophysical mapping of the inner continental shelf provides the scientific foundation for effective management of this dynamic coastal system as it responds to storms, sea-level rise, and anthropogenic activities." } ], "funder": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/whcmsc" }, "about": [ { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Geology" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Hurricane Sandy Response" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Energy" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Sea-Level Rise" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Coastal Erosion" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Water" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Science Technology" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Coastal Ecosystem Science" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Ocean/Marine Ecosystem Science" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "coastal hazards" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Coastal Processes" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Coastal Hydrology and Storm Surge" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "geologic framework" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Seafloor Mapping" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Geophysical Mapping" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "delmarva" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Coastal Change" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Maps and Mapping" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "seafloor mapping" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Sea-Level Rise/Climate Change" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Sediment Transport" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "hurricanes" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Hazards" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Environmental Health" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Seafloor Sampling" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Natural Hazards" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "coastal processes" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Coastal Elevation Data and Mapping" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Methods and Analysis" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Delmarva Peninsula" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Information Systems" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Ocean" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Ocean Ecosystems" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "coastal ecosystems" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Methods and Analyses" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Hurricanes and Extreme Storms" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Coasts" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Understanding Coastal Change" }, { "@type": "Thing", "name": "Coastal Margins" } ]
