     "abstract": "Loads and yields of suspended solids,\r\nnutrients, major ions, trace elements, organic\r\ncarbon, fecal coliform, dissolved oxygen, and\r\nalkalinity were estimated for 22 streams in\r\n11 major river basins in Kentucky. Mean daily\r\ndischarge was estimated at ungaged stations or\r\nstations with incomplete discharge records\r\nusing drainage-area ratio, regression analysis, or\r\na combination of the two techniques.\r\nStreamflow was partitioned into total and base\r\nflow and used to estimate loads and yields for\r\nsuspended solids and water-quality constituents\r\nby use of the ESTIMATOR and FLUX\r\ncomputer programs. The relative magnitude of\r\nconstituent transport to streams from groundand\r\nsurface-water sources was determined for\r\nthe 22 stations. Nutrient and suspended solids\r\nyields for drainage basins with relatively\r\nhomogenous land use were used to estimate the\r\ntotal-flow and base-flow yields of nutrient and\r\nsuspended solids for forested, agricultural, and\r\nurban land.\r\nYields of nutrients?nitrite plus nitrate,\r\nammonia plus organic nitrogen, and total\r\nphosphorus?in forested drainage basins were\r\ngenerally less than 1 ton per square mile per\r\nyear ((ton/mi2)/yr) and were generally less than\r\n2 (ton/mi2)/yr in agricultural drainage basins.\r\nThe smallest total-flow yields for nitrogen\r\n(nitrite plus nitrate) was estimated at Levisa\r\nFork at Paintsville in which 95 percent of the\r\nland is forested. This site also had one of the\r\nsmallest total-flow yields for ammonia plus\r\norganic nitrogen. In general, nutrient yields\r\nfrom forested lands were lower than those from\r\nurban and agricultural land.\r\nSome of the largest estimated total-flow\r\nyields of nutrients among agricultural basins\r\nwere for streams in the Licking River Basin, the\r\nNorth Fork Licking River near Milford, and the\r\nSouth Fork Licking River at Cynthiana.\r\nAgricultural land constitutes greater than\r\n75 percent of the drainage area in these two\r\nbasins. Possible sources of nutrients discharging\r\ninto the Licking River are farm and residential\r\nfertilizers. Estimated base-flow yields of\r\nsuspended solids and nutrients at several basins\r\nin the larger Green River and Lower\r\nCumberland River Basins were about half of\r\ntheir estimated total-flow yields. The karst\r\nterrain in these basins makes the ground water\r\nhighly susceptible to contamination, especially\r\nif a confining unit is thin or absent.",
