The models presented here draw heavily from observations, monitoring, and experiments conducted on K\u012blauea Volcano, which, as the site of frequent and accessible eruptions, has attracted scientists from around the globe. Long-lived eruptions in particular\u2014Halema\u2018uma\u2018u 1907\u201324, K\u012blauea Iki 1959, Mauna Ulu 1969\u201374, Pu\u2018u \u2018\u014c\u2018\u014d-Kupaianaha 1983\u2013present, and Halema\u2018uma\u2018u 2008\u2013present\u2014have offered incomparable opportunities to conceptualize and constrain theoretical models with multidisciplinary data and to field-test model results. The central theme in our retrospective is the interplay of magmatic gas and near-liquidus basaltic melt. A century of study has shown that gas exsolution facilitates basaltic dike propagation; volatile solubility and vesiculation kinetics influence magma-rise rates and fragmentation depths; bubble interactions and gas-melt decoupling modulate magma rheology, eruption intensity, and plume dynamics; and pyroclast outgassing controls characteristics of eruption deposits.
