Low\u2010frequency synthetics (<1\u2009\u2009Hz<1\u2009\u2009Hz) are calculated using deterministic, 3D finite\u2010difference simulations and are combined with high\u2010frequency (>1\u2009\u2009Hz>1\u2009\u2009Hz) stochastic synthetics using a matched filter at 1\u00a0Hz. We show that this compound rupture model and overall approach accurately reproduces waveform envelopes and observed response spectral accelerations (SAs) from the Tokachi\u2010Oki event. We find that sufficiently short subfault rise times (i.e.,\u00a0<\u223c1\u20132\u2009\u2009s<\u223c1\u20132\u2009\u2009s) are necessary to reproduce energy\u00a0\u223c1\u2009\u2009Hz\u223c1\u2009\u2009Hz. This is achieved by either (1)\u00a0including distinct subevents with short rise times, as may be suggested by the Tokachi\u2010Oki data, or (2)\u00a0imposing a fast\u2010slip velocity over the entire rupture area. We also include a systematic study on the effects of varying several kinematic rupture parameters. We find that simulated strong ground motions are sensitive to the average rupture velocity and coherence of the rupture front, with more coherent ruptures yielding higher response SAs. We also assess the effects of varying the average slip velocity and the character (i.e., area, magnitude, and location) of high\u2010stress\u2010drop subevents.
