"abstract": "Pesticide\u00a0occurrence and concentrations were evaluated in the\u00a0San\u00a0Joaquin\u00a0River\u00a0Basin\u00a0to determine potential sources and mode of\u00a0transport. Land use in the\u00a0basin\u00a0is mainly agricultural. Spatial variations in\u00a0pesticide\u00a0occurrence were evaluated in relation to\u00a0pesticide\u00a0application and cropping patterns in three contrasting subbasins and at the mouth of the\u00a0basin. Temporal variability in\u00a0pesticide\u00a0occurrence was evaluated by fixed interval sampling and by sampling across the hydrograph during winter storms. Four herbicides (simazine, metolachlor, dacthal, and EPTC) and two insecticides (diazinon and chlorpyrifos) were detected in more than 50 percent of the samples. Temporal, and to a lesser extent spatial, variation in\u00a0pesticide\u00a0occurrence is usually consistent with\u00a0pesticide\u00a0application and cropping patterns. Diazinon concentrations changed rapidly during winter storms, and both eastern and western tributaries contributed diazinon to the\u00a0San\u00a0Joaquin\u00a0River\u00a0at concentrations toxic to the water flea\u00a0Ceriodaphnia dubia\u00a0at different times during the hydrograph. During these storms, toxic concentrations resulted from the\u00a0transport\u00a0of only a very small portion of the applied diazinon.",
