'@context': https://schema.org '@type': Person affiliation: [] description: - '@type': TextObject abstract: Water Quality Specialist - Microbiologist with the Pennsylvania Water Science Center additionalType: short description - '@type': TextObject abstract: Hi, I'm Joe Duris. I'm interested in trace organic compounds in water, understanding their fate and transport, and their interactions with stream and aquifer ecosystems. Have any questions, feel free to contact me. additionalType: staff profile page introductory statement - '@type': TextObject abstract: Throughout my time at the USGS I have been actively involved in many facets of water-quality monitoring and research. I have worked with several national and regional USGS programs including the Toxics Substances Hydrology program (Toxics), the National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA), the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI), and most recently the Next Generation Water Observing System (NGWOS) Program in the Delaware River Basin. Most of my work throughout my career has focused on evaluating the occurrence, fate, and transport of fecally-derived pathogens and their relation to trace organic compounds (PFAS, wastewater compounds, pharmaceuticals, hormones, pesticides). In addition, I have worked on issues of nutrient enrichment and Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) in inland lakes and the Great Lakes, and on monitoring nutrient and sediment flux using surrogate regression models.Current ResearchEvaluation of the distribution, fate, transport, and mass-balance of Per-and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) at multiple spatial scales and refining and testing field techniques for proper sampling of PFAS in surface waterEvaluation of suspended sediment and nutrient flux in real-time using surrogate regression models by rating in-stream measurements with parameters of interestExploring the connection between blending untreated human sewage and acid mine drainage on the microbial ecology ofEscherichia coli(E. coli) in streamsData management, data visualization, and evaluating new monitoring technologies additionalType: personal statement email: jwduris@usgs.gov hasCredential: - '@type': EducationalOccupationalCredential name: Master of Science in Biology with a focus on Environmental Microbiology, Western Michigan University, 2002 - '@type': EducationalOccupationalCredential name: Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science and Chemistry, Western Michigan University, 1998 hasOccupation: - '@type': OrganizationalRole affiliatedOrganization: '@type': Organization name: Pennsylvania Water Science Center url: https://www.usgs.gov/centers/pennsylvania-water-science-center roleName: Water Quality Specialist - Microbiologist startDate: '2024-05-12T15:30:24.152038' - '@type': Occupation additionalType: self-claimed professional experience name: Water-Quality Specialist, Pennsylvania Water Science Center, 2016-present - '@type': Occupation additionalType: self-claimed professional experience name: Microbiologist, Michigan Water Science Center, 2002-2016 identifier: - '@type': PropertyValue propertyID: GeoKB value: https://geokb.wikibase.cloud/entity/Q45861 - '@type': PropertyValue propertyID: ORCID value: 0000-0002-8669-8109 jobTitle: Water Quality Specialist - Microbiologist knowsAbout: - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Water Quality - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Per-and Polyfluorinated Alkyl Substances (PFAS) - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Chemicals of Emerging Concern - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Microbiology - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Pathogens & Indicator bacteria - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Harmful Algal Blooms memberOf: '@type': OrganizationalRole member: '@type': Organization name: U.S. Geological Survey name: staff member startDate: '2024-05-12T15:30:24.149253' name: Joe Duris url: https://www.usgs.gov/staff-profiles/joe-duris
