'@context': https://schema.org '@type': Person affiliation: [] description: - '@type': TextObject abstract: Research Geneticist with the Alaska Science Center additionalType: short description - '@type': TextObject abstract: Damian Menning is a Research Geneticist at the USGS Alaska Science Center. additionalType: staff profile page introductory statement - '@type': TextObject abstract: Damian has a multi-disciplinary background combining molecular ecology, stable isotopes, geochemistry, and hydrology. As a Research Geneticist in the Molecular Ecology Laboratory at the Alaska Science Center he has worked on numerous diverse projects to include microsatellites, conversion of microsatellites to Next Generation Sequencing, transcriptomes, and mitogenomes. His primary area of expertise is the utilization of environmental DNA (eDNA) and its associated techniques to answer a diverse array of scientific questions such as identifying pathogens, invasive species, diet, community structure, and microbiomes of multiple species. Within this skill set he excels at the design, development, and validation of multispecies metabarcoding markers which he produces using custom Python and Biopython scripts. He is always open to collaboration during all steps of a scientific study from initial idea to sampling strategy to data analysis and everything in between. additionalType: personal statement email: dmenning@usgs.gov hasCredential: - '@type': EducationalOccupationalCredential name: Ph.D. 2014 University of South Florida, Tampa FL Cell and Molecular Biology - '@type': EducationalOccupationalCredential name: B.S. 2006 Texas A&M University at Galveston, Galveston TX Marine Biology hasOccupation: - '@type': OrganizationalRole affiliatedOrganization: '@type': Organization name: Alaska Science Center url: https://www.usgs.gov/centers/alaska-science-center roleName: Research Geneticist startDate: '2024-05-12T16:01:28.323815' - '@type': Occupation additionalType: self-claimed professional experience name: 2021 - Present Research Geneticist, USGS, Alaska Science Center, Anchorage, Alaska - '@type': Occupation additionalType: self-claimed professional experience name: 2015 - 2021 Geneticist, USGS, Alaska Science Center, Anchorage, Alaska identifier: - '@type': PropertyValue propertyID: GeoKB value: https://geokb.wikibase.cloud/entity/Q47994 - '@type': PropertyValue propertyID: ORCID value: 0000-0003-3547-3062 jobTitle: Research Geneticist knowsAbout: - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Genetics - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Environmental DNA - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Python/Biopython scripting - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Molecular ecology - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Bioinformatics memberOf: '@type': OrganizationalRole member: '@type': Organization name: U.S. Geological Survey name: staff member startDate: '2024-05-12T16:01:28.321275' name: Damian M Menning, Ph.D. url: https://www.usgs.gov/staff-profiles/damian-m-menning
