Prior to that she served as a Research Wildlife Biologist for several USGS Science Centers after receiving her graduate degree from University of Minnesota. In 2015, Dr. Powell became the Unit Leader of the Florida Unit. Her research focuses on avian ecology, particularly species of conservation concern, and spans from the North Slope of Alaska to the shores of Florida. Dr. Powell's interests include breeding and migration ecology. Her work on migration includes tracking birds with devices ranging from light-level geolocators to satellite transmitters to determine routes of migration routes, timing of migration, variation in age classes and individuals, and locations of stopover/staging and wintering areas. Although her early work on piping plovers led to a long career working with shorebirds, she has worked on many other groups including waterfowl, songbirds, and long-legged waders. Dr. Powell has taught classes and workshops on Scientific Writing and Publishing, as well as special topics courses on Migration Ecology and Avian Ecology.Areas of ExpertiseMarine/Coastal Ecology, Movement Ecology, Population Dynamics, Species Management, T&E Species ManagementTaxon Groups StudiedCoastal/Marine Birds, Nongame Fish/Wildlife, Songbirds, Species of Greatest Conservation Need, WaterfowlResearch InterestsConservation BiologyAvian EcologyEndangered Species Biology and ManagementTeaching InterestsConservation BiologyEndangered Species ManagementAvian EcologyScientific Writing additionalType: personal statement email: abby_powell@usgs.gov hasCredential: - '@type': EducationalOccupationalCredential name: Ph D University of Minnesota 1992 - '@type': EducationalOccupationalCredential name: MS San Diego State University 1986 - '@type': EducationalOccupationalCredential name: BS Cornell University 1980 hasOccupation: - '@type': OrganizationalRole affiliatedOrganization: '@type': Organization name: Cooperative Research Units url: https://www.usgs.gov/programs/cooperative-research-units roleName: Research Wildlife Biologist startDate: '2024-05-12T15:44:16.095240' identifier: - '@type': PropertyValue propertyID: GeoKB value: https://geokb.wikibase.cloud/entity/Q54161 - '@type': PropertyValue propertyID: ORCID value: 0000-0002-9783-134X jobTitle: Research Wildlife Biologist knowsAbout: - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: population dynamics - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: movement ecology - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: coastal ecology memberOf: '@type': OrganizationalRole member: '@type': Organization name: U.S. Geological Survey name: staff member startDate: '2024-05-12T15:44:16.092689' name: Abby Powell, PhD url: https://www.usgs.gov/staff-profiles/abby-powell
