Forms a series with hetaerolite.

Hausmannite has a tetragonal distorted spinel structure (due to the Jahn-Teller distortion of the Mn3+-centred polyhedron). When heated above 1473 K, a cubic high-temperature phase appears (Frenzel 1980).
