Official website claims can have only a single value per entity. They must contain a unique URL that can act as an identifier of sorts for the entity. In the GeoKB, official website claims are used for people and organization entities with source information described in further detail below.

Person

For person entities, official websites are generally the USGS Staff Profile URL that often serves as the primary source for a person record being instantiated in the knowledge graph. Label and description are both developed from staff profiles, with description made up of the person's primary organizational role coupled with the primary organization name (e.g., "biologist with the Upper Midwest Ecosystem Science Center"). The following claims are primarily sourced from Staff Profiles:

  • Employer set to USGS as an assumption with date qualifiers based on profiles no longer being accessible or profile pages flagged with "former employee."
  • Affiliation(s) linked on URL of primary or additional organizations listed.
  • Email address when provided.
  • ORCID identifier when provided.
  • Organization role(s)/title(s) from staff profiles are matched in processing to produce occupation claims where possible. This can result in multiple occupation claims (e.g., "supervisor" as well as something related to a scientific discipline).
  • "Knows about" claims when expertise terms can be matched to classification concepts within the GeoKB.
  • Manner of evaluation set to the RGE system when titles follow a convention (e.g., "Research Chemist").

The official website claim for persons will have all of the following qualifiers:

  • status code - the HTTP status code from the last time the URL was accessed
  • retrieved - date that the URL was last accessed and the status code encountered
  • last updated - date that the information was successfully pulled from the URL and used to update claims

Some official website claims will also have previous address qualifiers containing other URLs that were once used for the same individual. These URLs may or may not still be active and may or may not redirect to the current URL.

Raw web page HTML is scraped and transformed into a standardized schema.org/Person document that is cached as JSON on the person's item talk page under a "USGS Staff Profile" key. Other source documents from ORCID and OpenAlex may also be included.
