A Geographic Information System (GIS) was developed to derive model input data from Light Detection and Ranging (lidar) Digital Elevation Models (DEM) at each stream crossing location. Hydraulic models were built for existing culvert designs as well as preliminary culvert designs for a 3-sided box, 3-sided arch, and a pipe culvert using field survey and GIS data. The preliminary culvert models were designed to convey the 10- and 4-percent annual exceedance probability (AEP) flood flows based on Massachusetts Department of Transportation highway functional classification and associated hydraulic design flow (2020) and to meet the Massachusetts Stream Crossing Standards (SCS) developed by River and Stream Continuity Partnership (2006).

This data release contains links to two child items containing hydraulic modeling data and supplemental geospatial data for selected stream crossing sites in the Squannacook River Basin in north-central Massachusetts.
The child item named “Hydraulic Model Data for Selected Stream Crossing Sites in the Squannacook River Basin, North-Central Massachusetts” contains U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ Hydrologic Engineering Center River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) hydraulic model files along with field survey data associated with each stream crossing location. This data release also includes a data dictionary defining culvert designs, site locations, modeled flows and water surface elevations, and aquatic habitat and stream connectivity restoration potential.
The child item named “Spatial Data Layers for Selected Stream Crossing Sites in the Squannacook River Basin, North-Central Massachusetts” contains geospatial data files of stream cross sections, stream centerlines, stream bank lines, and stream crossing location points used as input for hydraulic models.
Additionally, these preliminary culvert designs and selected data are hosted on the U.S. Geological Survey StreamStats web application (https://streamstats.usgs.gov/ss/) for Massachusetts.

References:
River and Stream Continuity Partnership, 2006, Massachusetts river and stream crossing standards: revised version March 1, 2011 and corrected March 8, 2012, accessed on October 28, 2021 at https://www.mass.gov/doc/massachusetts-river-and-stream-crossing-standards

Massachusetts Department of Transportation, 2020, Load and resistance factor design (LRFD) Bridge Manual – Part I, Chapter 1 bridge site exploration, January 2020 revision, 26 p, accessed October 1, 2021 at https://www.mass.gov/doc/chapter-1-bridge-site-exploration/download
First release: 2024
Revised: July 2024 (ver. 1.1)

Abstract" }

} }
dois"
