Early Landsat satellites offered a wealth of new data that improved mapping of remote areas and geologic features along with digital analysis of vegetation. The utility of Landsat\u2019s spatial and spectral resolution has advanced its use for applications that benefit society such as global crop forecasting, forest monitoring, water use, carbon assessments, and the base for Google Maps. Landsat\u2019s long-term data record provides an unrivaled resource for observing land cover and land-use change over a timescale of decades. The free and open Landsat data policy in 2008 was a paradigm shift for the world. Today, due to improved analytical and computing capabilities, the Landsat archive is poised to shift into a more real-time monitoring and understanding of the Earth.", "description": "5 p.", "publisher": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "GIM International Magazine" }, "author": [ { "@type": "Person", "name": "Barnes, Christopher christopher.barnes.ctr@usgs.gov", "givenName": "Christopher", "familyName": "Barnes", "email": "christopher.barnes.ctr@usgs.gov", "identifier": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "propertyID": "ORCID", "value": "0000-0002-4608-4364", "url": "https://orcid.org/0000-0002-4608-4364" }, "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/eros" } ] }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Butcher, Ginger", "givenName": "Ginger", "familyName": "Butcher", "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "NASA" } ] }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Owen, Linda jonescheit@usgs.gov", "givenName": "Linda", "familyName": "Owen", "email": "jonescheit@usgs.gov", "identifier": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "propertyID": "ORCID", "value": "0000-0002-1734-5406", "url": "https://orcid.org/0000-0002-1734-5406" }, "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center (Geography)", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/eros" }, { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/eros" } ] } ], "funder": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Earth Resources Observation and Science (EROS) Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/eros" } ] }
