Carla has more than 40 years of experience working in geology and natural resources. Her first jobs were as an instructor of geology labs at Indiana University of Pennsylvania (1978) and a Geologist with the Rochester & Pittsburgh Coal Company (1979).After completion of coursework for her master’s degree, Ms. Brezinski took a position as a Geologist with the U.S. Bureau of Mines (USBM) in Pittsburgh, PA, where she conducted research on the effects of geology on mine safety. In 1988, she advanced to USBM headquarters in Washington, DC, and served as Program Manager for the Human Factors and Disaster Prevention research programs. When the Bureau of Mines was abolished in 1996, she moved to the Natural Resources Conservation Service of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. As part of the headquarters staff of the National Resources Inventory (NRI), Carla coordinated with the State Resource Inventory Specialists, apportioned the annual State allocations for the NRI, developed cooperative agreements, addressed issues from financial audits, analyzed NRI data, and authored documents on NRI results. From 1999 to 2007, she was the Department of Agriculture’s representative on the Federal Advisory Committee for the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program. In 2017 she joined the USGS as Associate Science Center Director for the Eastern Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center (EMERSC), now part of the Geology, Energy & Minerals Science Center. Carla provides guidance and oversight for scientists performing research on projects funded by the Mineral Resources Program and the National Cooperative Geologic Mapping Program and is responsible for day-to-day operations of the Center.",
