       "description": "The University of Hawai'i at M'noa and the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the County of Maui Department of Water Supply and the State of Hawai'i Commission on Water Resource Management, initiated a field data-collection program to provide information for evaluating how rates of water vapor and carbon dioxide exchange are dependent on plant species type within forested areas on the island of Maui. The field data collection is part of a study to quantify the impacts of high-priority non-native and dominant native plant species on freshwater availability throughout the State of Hawai'i (https://archive.usgs.gov/archive/sites/hi.water.usgs.gov/studies/maui_eco/index.html). The overall objective of the study is to provide needed information for (1) assessing species-specific impacts on freshwater availability and (2) reducing uncertainty in regional recharge estimates associated with forested areas. This dataset includes a summary of measurements of leaf-level gas exchange characteristics and leaf area index at four study sites on the island of Maui, Hawai'i between September 2017 and August 2018. This data release includes four files: a study site description file, two results files, and a metadata file: The study site description file [Maui_P1A_study_site_description_file.pdf] includes a table and map of the study sites and oblique areal imagery of the measurement plots at each study site. The leaf-level gas exchange data file [Maui_P1A_leaf_level_gas_exchange_data.csv] contains attributes that describe the study site, dominant vegetation, measurement date, and leaf-level gas exchange measurement results of 10 different plant species. The leaf-area index data file [Maui_P1A_leaf_area_index_data.csv] contains attributes that describe the study site, measurement date, dominant vegetation, target forest layer, measurement position, leaf-area index (LAI) estimate, sample size, and standard deviation of LAI estimate. The metadata file [Maui_P1A_gas_exchange_leaf_area_data_release_metadata.xml] includes explanation of the contents of the two data files and detailed descriptions of the methods used for each measurement. Measurements were made at four different study sites on the island of Maui: Waikamoi, Maluhia, Kahoma and Waikahi (see Table 1 and Figure 1 in study site description file). Each study site is located in forested land and consisted of one or more plots dominated by a high-priority non-native species and an adjacent or nearby plot dominated by native species.",
