New U/Pb, 40Ar/39Ar, apatite fission track, and apatite (U-Th)/He data constrain quantitative thermal and exhumation histories, which have been used to propose a model for the tectonic evolution of the emergent parts of the Bonaire Block and the southern Caribbean Plate boundary zone. An east facing arc system intruded through an oceanic plateau during ~90 to ~87 Ma and crops out on Aruba. Subsequent structural displacements resulted in >80\u00b0C of cooling on Aruba during 70\u201360 Ma. In contrast, exhumation of the island arc sequence exposed on Bonaire occurred at 85\u201380 Ma and 55\u201345 Ma. Santonian exhumation on Bonaire occurred immediately subsequent to burial metamorphism and may have been driven by the collision of a west facing island arc with the Caribbean Plate. Island arc rocks intruded oceanic plateau rocks on Gran Roque at ~65 Ma and exhumed rapidly at 55\u201345 Ma. We attribute Maastrichtian-Danian exhumation on Aruba and early Eocene exhumation on Bonaire and Gran Roque to sequential diachronous accretion of their basement units to the South American Plate. Widespread unconformities indicate late Eocene subaerial exposure. Late Oligocene\u2013early Miocene dextral transtension within the Bonaire Block drove subsidence and burial of crystalline basement rocks of the Leeward Antilles to \u22641 km. Late Miocene\u2013recent transpression caused inversion and \u22641 km of exhumation, possibly as a result of the northward escape of the Maracaibo Block.", "description": "30 p.", "publisher": { "@type": "Organization", "name": "American Geophysical Union" }, "author": [ { "@type": "Person", "name": "Kerr, Andrew C.", "givenName": "Andrew C.", "familyName": "Kerr" }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Cosca, Michael", "givenName": "Michael", "familyName": "Cosca", "identifier": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "propertyID": "ORCID", "value": "0000-0002-0600-7663", "url": "https://orcid.org/0000-0002-0600-7663" }, "affiliation": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Geology, Geophysics, and Geochemistry Science Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/gggsc" } ] }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "van der Lelij, Roelant", "givenName": "Roelant", "familyName": "van der Lelij" }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Chew, David", "givenName": "David", "familyName": "Chew" }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Spikings, Richard A.", "givenName": "Richard A.", "familyName": "Spikings" }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Kounov, Alexandre", "givenName": "Alexandre", "familyName": "Kounov" }, { "@type": "Person", "name": "Villagomez, Diego", "givenName": "Diego", "familyName": "Villagomez" } ], "funder": [ { "@type": "Organization", "name": "Central Mineral and Environmental Resources Science Center", "url": "https://www.usgs.gov/centers/gggsc" } ], "spatialCoverage": [ { "@type": "Place", "additionalType": "unknown", "name": "Caribbean Plate" }, { "@type": "Place", "geo": [ { "@type": "GeoShape", "additionalProperty": { "@type": "PropertyValue", "name": "GeoJSON", "value": { "type": "FeatureCollection", "features": [ { "type": "Feature", "properties": {}, "geometry": { "type": "Polygon", "coordinates": [ [ [ -95, -5 ], [ -95, 24 ], [ -54, 24 ], [ -54, -5 ], [ -95, -5 ] ] ] } } ] } } }, { "@type": "GeoCoordinates", "latitude": 9.5, "longitude": -74.5 } ] } ] }
