Physiographically, the Osage SW quadrangle is located within a transitional area between the Boston Mountains to the south, and the Springfield Plateau to the north. Geologically, the area is on the southern flank of the Ozark dome; an uplift with the oldest rocks exposed at its center in the St. Francois Mountains in Missouri. Exposed within the quadrangle is an approximately 1,460-foot-thick sequence of Ordovician, Mississippian, and Pennsylvanian carbonate and clastic sedimentary rocks that have been mildly deformed by a series of faults and folds. The southeasternmost corner of the map area falls within the Buffalo National River\u2014a park which encompasses the Buffalo River and adjacent land that is administered by the National Park Service.
