abstract: I am a research ecologist and statistician who uses advanced quantitative
tools to answer questions at the intersection of fundamental ecology and applied
conservation. My research aims to understand the factors impacting the distributions
and population dynamics for individual species and whole communities, then use
that information to identify populations of conservation concern and ultimately
develop effective conservation and management actions.

I received my Bachelor's degree from Miami University in Zoology and Environmental Science. While there, I studied trophic interactions in freshwater systems. I attended Louisiana State University to pursue a MS in wildlife studying habitat use in secretive marsh birds. I then worked as a wildlife biologist at the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center addressing conservation issues on DoD properties. Eventually I returned to graduate school at Oregon State University to pursue a MS in statistics and a PhD in Forest Ecosystems and Society studying the effects of forest fragmentation on breeding birds. I then did a postdoc with at the Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center comparing land-sparing and land-sharing conservation approaches around coffee farms. In my second postdoc (Oregon State), I worked to better understand factors limiting the distribution of endangered Marbled Murrelets. additionalType: personal statement email: jvalente@usgs.gov hasCredential: [] hasOccupation: - '@type': OrganizationalRole affiliatedOrganization: '@type': Organization name: Cooperative Research Units url: https://www.usgs.gov/programs/cooperative-research-units roleName: Research Wildlife Biologist startDate: '2024-05-10T20:57:47.897308' - '@type': Occupation additionalType: self-claimed professional experience name: Assistant Unit Leader, Alabama Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, 2022- - '@type': Occupation additionalType: self-claimed professional experience name: U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center (conservation on DoD lands - '@type': Occupation additionalType: self-claimed professional experience name: Smithsonian Migratory Bird Center (land conservation and land-sharing around coffee farms) identifier: - '@type': PropertyValue propertyID: ORCID value: 0000-0002-6519-3523 jobTitle: Research Wildlife Biologist knowsAbout: - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: AI/Machine Learning - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: GIS/Spatial Analysis - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Habitat Management - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Human Impacts - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Landscape Ecology - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Remote Sensing - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Species Modeling - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: Threatened and Endangered Species memberOf: '@type': OrganizationalRole member: '@type': Organization name: U.S. Geological Survey name: staff member startDate: '2024-05-10T20:57:47.893872' name: Jonathon J.
