'@context': https://schema.org '@type': Person affiliation: [] description: - '@type': TextObject abstract: Hydrologist with the Oklahoma-Texas Water Science Center additionalType: short description - '@type': TextObject abstract: Dr. Smith constructs predictive hydrodynamic and water-quality models (CE-QUAL-W2; EFDC) to better understand land-use and hydrologic modification effects on nutrient fate/transport for inland lakes, estuaries, and reservoir systems. He also has a strong interest in improving the predictive capacity of these models to simulate harmful algal blooms. additionalType: staff profile page introductory statement - '@type': TextObject abstract: Erik Smith has been a hydrologist with the U.S. Geological Survey since 2005. Other hydrodynamic modeling interests include applied models to better serve water resource managers, such as the timing of harmful algal blooms and water-quality changes from large interbasin water transfers. Aside from hydrodynamic and water-quality modeling, Erik has applied experience with machine learning techniques (such as boosted regression trees) and Geographic Information Systems (including all ESRI products and QGIS).Erik started his career as a supporting scientist and full-time hydrologist on the NAWQA program's Agricultural Chemicals Transport (ACT) team (South Fork Iowa River). Building on this experience, he has spent much of his career leading studies to better understand agricultural impacts on groundwater recharge from both subsurface tile drainage and crop irrigation. additionalType: personal statement email: easmith@usgs.gov hasCredential: - '@type': EducationalOccupationalCredential name: Doctor of Philosophy, Water Resources Science, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, 2012 - '@type': EducationalOccupationalCredential name: Master of Science, Geology and Geophysics, University of Minnesota-Twin Cities, 2005 hasOccupation: - '@type': OrganizationalRole affiliatedOrganization: '@type': Organization name: Oklahoma-Texas Water Science Center url: https://www.usgs.gov/centers/oklahoma-texas-water-science-center roleName: Hydrologist startDate: '2024-05-12T15:59:18.001720' - '@type': OrganizationalRole affiliatedOrganization: '@type': Organization name: Water Resources Mission Area url: https://www.usgs.gov/mission-areas/water-resources roleName: Water-Use Data and Research Program Coordinator startDate: '2024-05-12T15:59:18.009331' identifier: - '@type': PropertyValue propertyID: GeoKB value: https://geokb.wikibase.cloud/entity/Q49411 - '@type': PropertyValue propertyID: ORCID value: 0000-0001-8434-0798 jobTitle: Hydrologist knowsAbout: - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: groundwater quality - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: land use change - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: CE-QUAL-W2 - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: water cycle - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: water budget - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: water-quality modeling - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: EFDC - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: SWB - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: R - '@type': Thing additionalType: self-claimed expertise name: harmful algal blooms memberOf: '@type': OrganizationalRole member: '@type': Organization name: U.S. Geological Survey name: staff member startDate: '2024-05-12T15:59:17.998891' name: Erik Smith, Ph.D. url: https://www.usgs.gov/staff-profiles/erik-smith
