"abstract": "Macroinvertebrate assemblages and environmental\nvariables were evaluated as part of the Idaho\nstatewide surface-water quality monitoring program\nduring 1996\u201398. Two assessment approaches were\nused to evaluate the macroinvertebrate data collected\nfrom Idaho rivers\u2014biological metrics and\nmultivariate statistical analyses. A total of 247 macroinvertebrate\ntaxa were identified in semiquantitative\nriffle habitat (richest targeted habitat; RTH)\nand qualitative multiple habitat (QMH) samples,\nwhich were collected from 40 sampling sites. Riffles\nsupported most of the taxa collected at all sites.\nOne hundred and eighty-four taxa (74 percent of\ntotal taxa) were identified in the RTH samples.\nTaxa considered abundant in RTH samples included\nOligochaeta,\nBaetis tricaudatus\n,\nHydropsyche\n,\nSimuliidae, Chironomidae pupae,\nCricotopus\n,\nEukiefferiella\n, and\nOrthocladius\ncomplex. Comparisons\nof RTH and QMH sample types indicated\nlittle difference in various metrics evaluated; either\nsample type could be used to evaluate biological\ncondition. Fourteen coldwater taxa were collected\nduring this study at 12 sampling sites, representing\nonly about 6 percent of all taxa collected and a frequency\nof occurrence of 30 percent for all sites. An\nevaluation of the Idaho Department of Environmental\nQuality invertebrate river index (IRI) identified\nstatistically significant differences between highand\nlow-quality sites, providing evidence that the index\ncan successfully discriminate impairment. IRI\nscores for all sampling sites identified 25 percent\nof the sites with poor biotic condition and 68 percent\nwith good biotic condition. Maximum temperatures\nat 62 percent of all sampling sites exceeded\nIdaho\u2019s instantaneous coldwater temperature\ncriteria of 22\n\u00b0\nC. No correspondence was evident\nbetween ecoregion percentages upstream\nfrom each site and macroinvertebrate assemblages.\nMultivariate analyses of RTH samples identified\nvarious environmental variables operating at different\nspatial scales that affect the macroinvertebrate\nassemblages in Idaho rivers. Six environmental\nvariables\u2014percent forested land, percent\nagricultural land, urban land, maximum water\ntemperature, percent substrate fines, and stream\ngradient\u2014were significant in describing variance\nin the macroinvertebrate assemblages. Two assessment approaches were\nused to evaluate the macroinvertebrate data collected\nfrom Idaho rivers\u2014biological metrics and\nmultivariate statistical analyses. A total of 247 macroinvertebrate\ntaxa were identified in semiquantitative\nriffle habitat (richest targeted habitat; RTH)\nand qualitative multiple habitat (QMH) samples,\nwhich were collected from 40 sampling sites. Riffles\nsupported most of the taxa collected at all sites.\nOne hundred and eighty-four taxa (74 percent of\ntotal taxa) were identified in the RTH samples.\nTaxa considered abundant in RTH samples included\nOligochaeta,\nBaetis tricaudatus\n,\nHydropsyche\n,\nSimuliidae, Chironomidae pupae,\nCricotopus\n,\nEukiefferiella\n, and\nOrthocladius\ncomplex. Comparisons\nof RTH and QMH sample types indicated\nlittle difference in various metrics evaluated; either\nsample type could be used to evaluate biological\ncondition. Fourteen coldwater taxa were collected\nduring this study at 12 sampling sites, representing\nonly about 6 percent of all taxa collected and a frequency\nof occurrence of 30 percent for all sites. An\nevaluation of the Idaho Department of Environmental\nQuality invertebrate river index (IRI) identified\nstatistically significant differences between highand\nlow-quality sites, providing evidence that the index\ncan successfully discriminate impairment. IRI\nscores for all sampling sites identified 25 percent\nof the sites with poor biotic condition and 68 percent\nwith good biotic condition. Maximum temperatures\nat 62 percent of all sampling sites exceeded\nIdaho\u2019s instantaneous coldwater temperature\ncriteria of 22\n\u00b0\nC. No correspondence was evident\nbetween ecoregion percentages upstream\nfrom each site and macroinvertebrate assemblages.\nMultivariate analyses of RTH samples identified\nvarious environmental variables operating at different\nspatial scales that affect the macroinvertebrate\nassemblages in Idaho rivers. Six environmental\nvariables\u2014percent forested land, percent\nagricultural land, urban land, maximum water\ntemperature, percent substrate fines, and stream\ngradient\u2014were significant in describing variance\nin the macroinvertebrate assemblages.
