   personal_statement: Before joining the USGS in 1990 Mike served in the US Navy,
     where he was responsible for maintaining ship equipment and communication systems.
     During his time at the USGS, Mike has performed numerous surface water, groundwater,
     and water-quality data collection activities in Northern and Western Oregon.
     He has considerable experience developing stage/discharge relationships in area
     rivers and streams and designing, building, and maintaining instrumentation
     for surface water, groundwater, and water-quality monitoring networks. Mike
     is also responsible for keeping up with the ever-increasing changes to electronic
     field data collection and telemetry equipment for his team.
